Choose the Right File Format for a Print Job
Compare PDF, TIFF, JPEG, PNG and editable source files by layout, compression, transparency, color and printer requirements.
PDF is often appropriate for multi-element layouts, vector type and controlled page boxes; TIFF can carry high-quality raster data; JPEG is compact and widely accepted for flattened photographs; PNG is lossless and supports transparency but is not a universal press-delivery format. The provider's specification takes priority.

Decide what the file must preserve
A photograph, a book cover, a logo sheet and a twenty-page booklet do not need the same container. List whether the handoff must preserve vector type, multiple pages, transparency, spot colors, high bit depth, layers or only one flattened image.
Then read the accepted formats for the exact provider product. A technically capable format can still be rejected by an automated upload system or interpreted differently from the provider's recommended preset.
Use PDF when document structure matters
PDF can contain vector text and graphics alongside raster images, preserve multiple pages and describe media, trim and bleed boxes. That makes it useful for flyers, books, packaging and other composed layouts.
Not every PDF is print-ready. Fonts, image resolution, transparency, color spaces and page boxes can still be wrong. When a provider requests PDF/X or a named export preset, use and preflight that requested condition instead of choosing random high-quality settings.
Use TIFF as a high-quality raster handoff when accepted
TIFF supports several color modes, higher bit depths and lossless compression options, making it useful for high-quality raster exchange and archival masters. It can also create large files and preserve layers that a receiving workflow does not want.
Ask whether the provider accepts layered TIFF, expects flattening, supports the embedded profile and has a file-size limit. Keep the layered master separately even when the delivery TIFF is flattened.
JPEG is practical when its limits match the job
JPEG uses lossy compression but can produce a compact, visually strong delivery file when saved once at an appropriate quality from a clean master. Many photo labs request a high-quality sRGB JPEG for exactly this reason.
Repeated JPEG editing and resaving can accumulate artifacts around sharp edges and gradients. JPEG also does not preserve transparency or editable layers, so it is a poor master format and may be unsuitable for logos, line art or a layout that should retain vector text.
PNG solves transparency, not every print requirement
PNG uses lossless compression and can preserve an alpha channel, which is valuable for isolated graphics and some merchandise workflows. It is normally RGB-based and does not replace a provider's requested CMYK PDF or other press specification.
Transparency can be flattened against an unexpected background by an upload workflow. Test the real product preview and verify the provider's handling rather than selecting PNG merely because its compression is lossless.
Keep the editable master separate from delivery
PSD, PSB, AI or another application-native file can retain layers, masks, vectors and adjustment history. Preserve that master even if production needs a flattened JPEG, TIFF or PDF.
After export, reopen the delivery file and confirm page count, pixel dimensions, physical page boxes, fonts, transparency, embedded profile and visible bleed. Naming the file with size and revision helps prevent an older or differently cropped export from being uploaded.
