One folded duplex sheet produces four pages
Plan Pages and Sheets for a Saddle-Stitch Booklet
Calculate booklet page multiples, physical sheets, basic printer spreads and the limits of creep estimates before sending a saddle-stitch file.
Each sheet printed on both sides and folded once creates four booklet pages. Round the complete page count up to a multiple of four, add intentional blanks, keep the design file in normal reading order and confirm whether the provider wants single pages or imposed spreads.

Count every page, including intentional blanks
The front cover is page 1 when it belongs to the same folded section. Inside covers, title pages, blank separators and the back cover all occupy physical pages even when they carry no visible content.
A 14-page file cannot create a complete saddle-stitched section by itself. It needs two additional pages, often placed deliberately inside the covers or at the end, to produce sixteen pages on four sheets.
One folded sheet creates four pages
A duplex sheet has two printed sides; folding it once creates four page faces in the finished booklet. Dividing the valid production page count by four gives the number of physical sheets.
The same sixteen-page booklet has eight two-page printer spreads because every sheet has a front and a back. Reader spreads visible in the design application are not necessarily those printer spreads.
Design in reading order unless told otherwise
Keep pages 1 through the final page in their natural sequence. In a simple sixteen-page imposition, 16 pairs with 1 on the outside front, but that is a production arrangement rather than the order in which the document should normally be authored.
Adobe's booklet functions or a print provider's RIP can create the pairs, rotate backs and apply device marks. Manually supplying pairs when the provider expects single pages can result in a second imposition and an unusable booklet.
Plan the cover and paper change separately
If the cover uses heavier stock, a different size or separate finishing, ask whether it should be included in the same page count and PDF. Some short-run workflows treat a self-cover as part of the section; others request a separate four-page cover file.
Paper caliper provides a rough sense of the closed stack, but compression, grain, fold quality and cover stock affect the physical result. Make a folded dummy from representative paper before finalizing margins near the centre.
Creep is not a universal arithmetic constant
Nested sheets push inner page edges farther outward. Imposition systems compensate by shifting page content, a setting commonly called creep. Its usable value depends on paper thickness, number of sheets, fold and trimming method.
A generic web calculator should not pretend to know the printer's final creep instruction. Adobe exposes creep as an imposition setting; the production provider should supply or apply the correct value. Keep folios and critical objects comfortably inside the trim and fold-safe area.
Preflight the imposed preview without replacing the source
Export the requested single-page PDF with correct bleed and page boxes, then use a booklet preview to inspect pair order, blank placement and orientation. Confirm that all pages share one trim size unless the provider permits otherwise.
Check the first and last sheets carefully, print a reduced or office-printer dummy, and mark the folds. The dummy tests reading order and blank placement; it does not certify commercial creep, cutting or color.

- Count covers, inside covers, content and deliberate blanks as physical pages.
- Round to a multiple of four and assign any added blank pages intentionally.
- Lay out and export normal single pages in reading order unless the provider says otherwise.
- Review an imposed preview, fold a dummy and confirm cover, creep, bleed and PDF requirements with production.
