Reserve the real edge loss
Side margins can represent printer limits, registration, finishing or operator preference. Enter the usable production assumption rather than the nominal roll width alone.
Model how many finished pieces fit across a roll, how many rows the quantity needs and how much linear media the selected orientation consumes. The calculation stays browser-local and keeps margins, bleed and gaps visible.
usable width = roll width − 2 × side margin
across = floor((usable width + gap) ÷ (artwork width + 2 × bleed + gap))
The model compares allowed orientations and chooses the shortest linear length.

The planner expands each piece by bleed before fitting it across the web. Gap is then added between repeated pieces, not around the outer edges unless your process requires it.
Auto mode compares both orientations and chooses the shorter web length. It does not decide whether grain, image direction, finishing or machine rules permit that rotation.
