Calculate Bleed, Trim and Safe Area

Calculate full artwork size, trim size and safe area in millimetres and pixels using editable bleed, margin and PPI values.

Quick answer

Bleed expands the artwork outside the final trim; the safe margin moves important content inward. Enter the provider's exact values for each edge to calculate all three boxes.

full canvas = trim + (2 × bleed)

How to use it

A result you can reproduce.

  1. Enter the final trimmed width and height.
  2. Enter the bleed and safe margin required on each edge.
  3. Use the full canvas dimensions for the artwork and keep critical content inside the safe result.

Every result is calculated in the page from the displayed inputs. Your printer's written production specification remains the final authority.

Worked example

See the numbers in context.

A4 trim at 210 × 297 mm with 3 mm bleed becomes a 216 × 303 mm artwork canvas. A 5 mm safe margin leaves a 200 × 287 mm safe area.
